Okay, here’s the real story … I was just about to hit 40 when what I call my “mini mid-life crisis” hit. I was married, raising two daughters and operating a small, home-based ecommerce business selling event furniture like folding tables and banquet chairs. Sure, between trying to figure out the business thing and taking care of house and home, I was BUSY. But not fulfilled. My dream had always been to be a mental health therapist. I was the only 10 year old I knew with a subscription to Psychology Today. But for various reasons, I went another route in college and earned my bachelor’s degree in business administration.
Back to my mini mid-life crisis … all I could picture was me on my death bed with my only REGRET being that I never had the career that I always pined for. I couldn’t live with that. So, what did I do? I sold my online business and went back to school for two years to get my master’s degree in psychology. I then spent an additional four years getting the necessary 3,000 training hours and licensing certifications needed to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Dream realized! Yea!!
So, for the last few years I’ve been enjoying my time helping others because I truly believe that compassion and empathy are my greatest gifts. I work part time as a therapist at a local community college that I love. Getting to support teens and young adults with major life challenges is fulfilling in the way I always hoped it would be.
While I love helping those in my own community, I was also having the bug to start another ecommerce business (and save a little money for a college fund). However, I wanted it to be something that would feel meaningful to me. As I was searching for ideas, I came across the Fair Trade concept. I’d heard the term, but didn’t have a good grasp of what it actually was. After doing some research, I was convinced it was a good fit for me.
Enter Fair Trade Fusion. The products on this website are carefully crafted by artisans around the world and include offerings from India, Africa, Southeast Asia, Mexico and Latin America. People in these countries often struggle to make ends meet and their talents have often been taken advantage of in the form of low wages and poor working conditions. The Fair Trade concept ensures that these artisans are paid a fair living wage for their goods, and that their working environment is safe and healthy. Artisans use sustainable and often recycled materials to create unique, one-of-a-kind treasures for you to enjoy or give as gifts. I like to call it guilt-free shopping because these are purchases you can truly feel good about! Your purchase not only helps these artists support their families, but it also gives them the freedom to express their creative talents.
So, that’s my story! I hope Fair Trade Fusion introduces you to some cool fair trade products for either yourself (you’re worth it!) or for someone special. I’m so impressed by what the artisans create — have a look around, you will be too!
